Summary
IN THE USE OF CONTROLLED NUCLEAR FUSION, THE MAGNETIC CONFINEMENT OF THE HOT REACTOR PLASMA, WHICH IS AT MORE THAN 100 MILLION DEGREES, PLAYS A DECISIVE ROLE. ACHIEVING SUITABLY STRONG MAGNETIC FIELDS IN LARGE SPACES IS POSSIBLE ONLY WITH SUPERCONDUCTIVE MAGNET COILS. FOR MORE THAN 15 YEARS INTENSIVE RESEARCH HAS BEEN UNDERWAY WORLDWIDE TO DEVELOP PROVEN SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETS FOR LARGE-SCALE PLASMA EXPERIMENTS AND FUSION REACTORS. RECENT YEARS HAVE SEEN TOROID PLASMA EXPERIMENTS OF THE TOKAMAK TYPE WITH SUPERCONDUCTING COILS, AS WELL AS SIGNIFICANT PROTOTYPE-MAGNET SYSTEMS. CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS AIM AT BUILDING BY THE END OF THIS DECADE A LARGE INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH REACTOR (NET OR ITER), WHICH IS ALREADY BEING PLANNED AS EITHER A EUROPEAN OR A GLOBAL (EUROPE, JAPAN, CIS, USA, ETC) PROJECT. THE < HIGH TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTORS > DISCOVERED ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO HAVE HAD LITTLE SIGNIFICANCE SO FAR FOR HIGH MAGNETIC FIELD SION REACTOR IS HIGHLY DESIRABLE BECAUSE OF THE IMPROVED OVERALL EFFICIENCY (ABOUT 3 %).
