THE SOLAR HOUSE.

Summary

A VERY LARGE CRUSHED STONE STORAGE HAS MADE IT POSSIBLE TO USE SOLAR ENERGY TO MEET THE ANNUAL HEATING, COOLING, AND HOT WATER NEEDS OF A RESIDENCE, WITH A PARASITIC POWER PENALTY OF ABOUT 3,500 KILOWH. WINTER TEMPERATURE WERE MAINTAINED AT 293 K (20 DEG C) WITH 289 K (16 DEG C) NIGHT SETBACK AND SUMMER TEMPERATURES AT 297 K (24 DEG C). OCCUPANT INTERVENTION WAS NEGLIGIBLE. THE EXTRA COST FOR THE SYSTEM IS READILY AMORTIZED BY THE SAVINGS IN PURCHASED ENERGY.
