Summary
The thermochemical storage based on the solid-gas sorption process is a technical solution that can be relevantly used in temperature-controlled transport containers. The principal of such systems is based on the coupling of two reversible physicochemical processes, a liquid-to-gas phase change of a natural fluid (ammonia) that takes place in an evaporator/condenser and a reversible reaction between this gas and a reactive salt that occurs in a thermochemical reactor. The basic process alternates two time delayed operating steps: a storage phase followed by an on-demand stand-alone refrigeration or heating phase. The thermal storage capacity of the system depends on the amount of the reactive salt that is implemented, but the cooling or heating powers are strongly affected by the quality of the heat and mass transfer at the evaporator/condenser and the reactor, and also the thermodynamic equilibrium deviations imposed to reactor. Depending on the operating temperatures and the reactive salt, there is an optimum operating pressure allowing to maximize these powers. Such a thermochemical system offers a stand-alone solution and the temperature control for cold chain containers. This study presents how to reach targeted thermal performance (cooling power and energy) and the qualification of a temperature-controlled container for the transport temperature-sensitive health products.
