DISCUSSES THE CFC ISSUE AND THE NEED TO REPLACE OZONE-DEPLETING CFCS IN THE MANUFACTURE OF RIGID URETHANE FOAMS (RUFS) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. NOTES THE INCREASED LEVELS OF INSULATION IN BUILDINGS REQUIRED BY THE REVISED BUILDING REGULATIONS IN ENGLAND AND WALES, WITH THE RESULTING ENERGY CONSERVATION CAUSING FOSSIL FUELS TO BE BURNT AT A SLOWER RATE, THEREBY REDUCING THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT CAUSED BY EMISSIONS OF CO2. POINTS OUT THAT PROPOSALS TO SIMPLY TO REPLACE RUFS WITH MINERAL FIBRE INSULATION MISS THAT FACT THAT THE ENERGY USED IN MANUFACTURING GLASS FIBRE, FOR EXAMPLE, IS MORE THAN TWICE THAT NEEDED TO PRODUCE RUF.
