EIGHT LOW MOLECULAR WEIGHT NON-PENETRATING AGENTS OF VARYING CHEMICAL NATURE WERE ALL SHOWN TO EXHIBIT A CONCENTRATION OPTIMUM FOR CRYOPROTECTION AT FAST FREEZING RATES TYPICAL OF SEROLOGICAL PROCEDURES. THE NATURE OF THIS OPTIMUM IS DESCRIBED. BETAINE AND TREHALOSE PRODUCED LESS DILUTION SHOCK THAN OTHER COMMON CRYOPRESERVATIVES, GLYCEROL AND HYDROXYETHYL STARCH. THE ADDITION OF BETAINE REDUCED DILUTION SHOCK IN GLYCEROL-PRESERVED CELLS. THE SUITABILITY OF SUCH AGENTS, WHEN USED AT OPTIMAL CONCENTRATIONS, AS CRYOPROTECTANTS FOR SEROLOGICAL PROCEDURES IS DISCUSSED.
