Summary

THIS INVESTIGATION HAS STUDIED THE FEASIBILITY OF USING THE REFRIGERATING MACHINERY IN ARTIFICIAL ICE RINKS AS HEAT PUMPS. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE REFRIGERATING MACHINERY BE COMPLEMENTED BY A HEAT PUMP, CONNECTED TO THE BRINE CIRCUIT AS THE HEAT SOURCE. THE OPERATING TIME FORTHE HEAT PUMP WOULD BE ABOUT 4,000 H/YEAR. DURING THE REST OF THE YEAR, THE HEAT PUMP WOULD RUN ONLY WHEN THE REFRIGERATING MACHINERY FOR THE ICE RINK IS RUNNING, IE WHEN THE OUTDOOR AIR TEMPERATURE EXCEEDS 273K (0 DEG C). THE ANNUAL ENERGY SAVINGS RESULTING FROM THIS INSTALLATION WOULD AMOUNT TO ABOUT 25% OF THE TOTAL ENERGY CONSUMPTION. (SYNOP. SWED. BUILD. RES., SE. , N.1, 1982/02, 18.
