Summary

THE GREAT LACK IN USEFUL ENERGY IMPEDES REFRIGERATED TRANSPORT AND STORAGE IN THE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. AS THESE COUNTRIES ARE CHIEFLY LOCATED IN AREAS RICH IN SUNSHINE, THE AUTHOR EXAMINES WHETHER SOLAR ENERGY COULD BE USED FOR REFRIGERATED TRUCKS. THE MOST ADVANTAGEOUS METHOD HE FINDS TO DRIVE TRADITIONAL COLD-STEAM COMPRESSOR REFRIGERATING MACHINES IS PHOTOVOLTAIC POWER GENERATION. A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF ONE POSSIBLE DESIGN FOR A MULTIPURPOSE COOLING CONTAINER OPERATING ON SOLAR ENERGY. IN A FEW YEARS THE USE OF SOLAR ENERGY IN REFRIGERATED TRUCKS COULD BE AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE CONVENTIONAL SYSTEMS IN A CERTAIN NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS.
