Summary

With the excellent environmental performance, R1233zd(E) receives a lot of attentions in water chiller and high temperature pump systems. Since a chlorine atom replaces the fluorine atom in the molecule, R1233zd(E) is nonflammable and has higher flame suppression effects than R1234ze(E). Thus, R1233zd(E) may be used as a fire retardant to overcome the shortcomings of flammability of HCs or several HFCs. In this study, the decomposition reactions of R1233zd(E) was established by Density functional theory (DFT), and the flame suppression mechanism of R1233zd(E) was analysed. In addition, the flammable refrigerants R152a and R32 were chosen to evaluate the flame suppression effects of R1233zd(E), experimentally. The lower flammability limits and upper flammability limits of R1233zd(E)/R152a and R1233zd(E)/R32 were tested out. The results showed that R1233zd(E) has a certain flame suppression, and the critical flammable volumetric ratio of R1233zd(E)/R152a and R1233zd(E)/R32 were about 2.8 and 0.8, respectively. The results will provide a comprehensive understanding of R1233zd(E) and its mixtures in combustibility hazards and safety applications.
