Theoretical description of magnetocaloric effect in La-Fe-Si alloys.

Summary

The theoretical model for description of the magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of La(Fe(x)Si(1-x))(13) compounds is proposed. The model is based on the theory of the itinerant-electron metamagnetism, Ginzburg-Landau phase transition theory, statistical physics and molecular field theory. The temperature dependence of the Landau coefficients for the itinerant-electron metamagnet is derived from the spin fluctuation model with the account of the magnetovolume effect. With the help of the model the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the magnetization and entropy change are obtained. It is shown that the calculated results are in a good agreement with the experimental ones.
