Summary

The thermal behaviour of a solid sorption generator of active carbon/alcohol machine is studied during heating and cooling phases with a preheated air flow. Cooling is certainly one of the first needs in developing countries not only for the comfort (air conditioning) but primarily for food and medicals preservations, the largest demand for cooling exist in locations where solar energy input is high (like Algeria) and, moreover, as there exists a large fraction of human population which lives in sunny regions without accesses to the electric grid. The objective of this work is the feasibility study of a solar adsorption refrigerator in the region of Bou Ismail-Tipaza (longitude: 2, 42, altitude: 0, latitude: 36, 39) tilted 30° south of Algeria. An experimental small cylindrical solar ice – maker has been developed in our laboratory (UDES) for testing and analyzing characteristics of this solar refrigerator. The working pair consists of methanol used as the refrigerant and the activated carbon as the absorption medium. The key part of solar ice-maker is the adsorbent bed, the adsorbent bed also called (collector), is made of copper, covered with selective black coating material and placed behind a single sheet of glass in a insulation case (polyurethane) equipped with damper on its bottom, for cooling when in the adsorbing phase, adsorbent is activated carbon (CELLULAR D with specific surface superior than 1050 m2/g) is placed within the cylindrical copper. In order to improve the heat transfer between the front side and adsorbent, three longitudinal copper fins (test 1), too increase the bed thermal conductivity, the activated carbon grains are mixed with small pieces of blanched copper (test 2). The test has been done in our laboratory (UDES) during October-November 2010 period under eviroment temperature almost 19°C and solar radiation of 700 W/m2.
