THE THERMAL CHARACTERISTICS OF WALLS AND BUILDING MATERIALS GIVE AN UNSUITABLE AND NON STANDARDISED PICTURE OF THE PHYSICAL PROCESS OF HEAT TRANSFER IN BUILDINGS. THE DIFFERENCES RESULTING FROM PRACTICAL DIFFICULTIES OR THE LACK OF STANDARDS ARE SHOWN. CRITERIA SUITABLE FOR A MORE CORRECT USE OF RESULTS ARE SUGGESTED AND NEW MATHEMATICAL MODELS FOR EVALUATING THE CONSEQUENCES OF TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS AND THERMAL INERTIA ARE GIVEN.
