Summary
Indoor Climate Quality has a determinant role in the occupants comfort, health and productivity. Hence, an appropriate design and control of the thermal comfort and Indoor Air Quality can improve work and learning performance as well as reduce absenteeism. Moreover, it is also determinant for the energy consumed in the building. Current standards on indoor environment focus on the whole indoor space, but do not consider the possibility of creating individual, proper spaces by personalized systems. A personalized system may divide the space in two zones, one close to the occupant and a general zone. This paper aims at studying the possible improvement of the thermal comfort in the individual occupied zone in offices by installing a personalized evaporative cooling system. The device consists of a small fan and a humidified media throughout which air supplied to the target zone is cooled by direct evaporation. This work presents the results of the characterization of the system operation and its effect on the thermal comfort at an office. Results show that it is possible to achieve neutral comfort conditions in the individual space if the system is properly placed, while it has a non-significant effect in the adjacent spaces. The system cannot neutralized the thermal loads if there is more than one occupant in the target space. It is thus concluded that the system can improve the individual thermal comfort in non-conditioned offices, provided that occupation is limited to one person per target space.
