Thermally driven heat pumps: opportunity in waste driven systems in the tropics.

Author(s) : SHAMSUDIN A. F., YASSIN M.

Summary

Tropical countries such as Malaysia have high ambient temperature averaging about 30 deg C annually. Industrial processes and power plants suffer the inherent high back-end temperature where useful enthalpy is lost to the environment. Thermally driven heat pumps have the potential of utilising the enthalpy lost for both the heating and cooling requirement. This energy enhancement method has been studied in the local agro-based process and power plants. Agro-based process plants would use absorption heat pump under the separate heat and power mode. With full condensing steam power turbine for power generation and absorption heat pumps using steam out of turbine to produce process steam, the use of solid waste and liquid effluents would be maximised.
