Thermodynamic analysis of solid/gas thermochemical transformers.

Analyse thermodynamique des transformateurs thermochimiques solide/gaz.

Summary

A thermochemical transformer consists of a closed thermodynamic system in which only heat transfer occurs, with three sources of heat. Application of both thermodynamic principles to such a system, along with the definition of the mean entropic temperature, show that the COP of these machines is comparable to that of a reversible quadrithermal machine comprising three Carnot machines. Desorption heat and refrigeration form the sources of two Carnot equivalent cycles (those of the motor and the generator respectively), while the third cycle takes into account internal exchange of matter within the machine. Comparison of the real cycle and the three Carnot equivalent cycles makes it possible to identify predominant sources of irreversibility and explains the major difference between COP exerted by thermochemical transformers and the Carnot COP associated with three temperatures of external sources.
