Thermodynamic analysis of vortex tube and work output expansion devices for the transcritical carbon dioxide cycle.

Author(s) : LI D., BAEK J. S., GROLL E. A., et al.

Summary

To improve the performance of a transcritical carbon dioxide refrigeration cycle, a vortex tube expansion device utilizing the Ranque-Hilsch effect or alternatively, an expansion work out device are proposed. The thermodynamic performances of the vortex tube and the expansion work out device are compared to the conventional isenthalpic expansion valve. The pros and cons of the expansion options are discussed. In addition, the impact of the three expansion options on the transcritical cycle performance is investigated based on simulation results.
