Thermoeconomic analysis of cooling for space conditioning.

Author(s) : POREDOS A., ZIHER D.

Summary

An increase in the standard of working and living conditions is inevitably connected with cooling as a part of air-conditioning systems. Cooling energy can be produced on base of absorption or vapour compression processes. The decision, whether to use absorption chillers or the compressor chillers, basically depends on the investment and operational costs. The investment costs for the absorption chillers are higher, depending on the type of the absorption chiller and the heat source in use. One of criteria for the decision could also be the ecological aspect. Final decision for type of cooling system has to be the result of thermoeconomic analysis. The paper represents the results of thermoeconomic analyses and its comparison for absorption and compressor chillers. The overall energy efficiency of absorption chiller is defined and compared with the efficiency of a compressor chiller driven by electricity. Method of economic evaluation of the total annual cost during whole life cycle of both systems is developed and represented.
