Summary

The increasing demand of customers for rapid production of clear ice in the household refrigerator requires the improvement of the ice making speed. In the paper, three-dimensional transient heat transfer problem of solidification of water in the automatic icemaker of the side-by-side type refrigerator is studied numerically. Six cases including the basic design and newly modified designs are investigated and compared. Solidification model accounting the latent heat of phase transition is adopted to simulate the water freezing process. Improvements of ice making speed are mainly considered through enhancement of heat convection and conduction. Simulation results show that ice growing direction in the trays' cells could explain well thin air channels found in ice images obtained from tests.
