Summary

THE AUTHOR POINTS OUT THAT, APART FROM THE USE OF AN EXPANSION ENGINE IN THE COLD-AIR MACHINE, THE REFRIGERATION CYCLE HAS INCLUDED WASTEFUL THROTTLING SINCE ITS INVENTION OVER A CENTURY AGO. WITH ENERGY USE BECOMING MORE CRITICAL AND THE LOSS FROM THROTTLING BEING VERY HIGH WITH SINGLE STAGE SCREW COMPRESSORS OPERATING ON FLUOROCARBON REFRIGERANTS OVER HIGH TEMPERATURE RANGES, IMPROVEMENTS IN THE VAPOUR-COMPRESSION CYCLE BECOME IMPERATIVE. A NUMBER OF IDEAS ARE SUGGESTED, THE MOST BENEFICIAL BEING THE USE OF MULTI-STAGE THROTTLING WITH AUXILIARY COMPRESSORS HANDLING THE FLASH GAS AT EACH STAGE. THIS IS A PRACTICAL SOLUTION FOR LARGE PLANTS AND USES EXISTING TECHNOLOGY. POSSIBILITIES ALSO EXIST IN SOME HEAT PUMP SITUATIONS FOR SUBCOOLING CONDENSATE USING A LOWER TEMPERATURE HEATING REQUIREMENT. D.W.H.
