Summary
The article first answers the following questions: Why work at low temperatures? How are low temperatures produced? Can different refrigerating systems be compared for efficiency? What are the orders of magnitude involved? How are cryogenic fluids used? The article goes on to describe the properties of helium, the applications of very low temperatures to the flow of electricity, superconductivity and the industrial applications of superconductivity. It concludes with a discussion of the outlook for achieving nanokelvins.
