Trends in refrigeration on board passenger ships.

Summary

For provision stores and medium capacity air conditioning, the technologies to fulfill these needs in marine are directly derived from the industrially proven solutions of land based systems. Well suited to meet the growing demand of large capacity water chillers, the industrially validated large R134a centrifugal chillers are increasing their share of the marine market, but attempts are also being made to extrapolate the technology of screw compressors to higher capacity with new refrigerants. Will these new "jumbo" screw chiller (used in marine only) provide the superior reliability which is expected on board ships?
