Summary
FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS OF 2 SURVEYS ON DEVELOPMENTS IN ABSORPTION HEAT PUMPS (AHP) FOR RESIDENTIAL AND SMALL COMMERCIAL USE IN THE USA AND JAPAN ARE PRESENTED. IT APPEARED THAT IN BOTH COUNTRIES THE AHP DEVELOPMENT IS BASED ON THE EXISTING DEMAND FOR AIR CONDITIONING. GAS UTILITIES PLAY A STIMULATING ROLE. IN THE USA 6 DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS FOR ADVANCED CYCLE AHP STARTED AROUND 1983. AS OF 1988 4 OF THESE HAVE RESULTED IN A PACKAGED PROTOTYPE FOR FIRST LABORATORY TESTS. IN JAPAN, AFTER THE DEFEAT OF FORMER AHP DEVELOPMENTS, SEVERAL INDUSTRIES TOGETHER STARTED RESEARCH IN 1988 TO CONCEPTUALIZE A NEW AHP (CYCLE, FLUID PAIR, MARKET, REGULATIONS). AFTER THIS FIRST NON-COMPETITIVE PHASE, FINAL DESIGNS WILL BE MADE BY EACH PARTICIPATING MANUFACTURER.
