EMPHASIS WAS PLACED ON THE MICROSCOPIC STUDY AND THE X-RAY PHOTOELECTRON SPECTROSCOPIC STUDY ON THE SURFACES OF DIFFERENT MATERIAL COMBINATIONS INCLUDING GREY CAST IRON-STEEL TESTED IN 5 LUBRICANT-REFRIGERANT MIXTURES INCLUDING POLYALKYLENE GLYCOL (PAG)-R134A. OBSERVATIONS SHOW THE FORMATION OF IRON OXIDES IN PAG-R134A, WHILE IRON CHLORIDE IN MINERAL OIL-R12. THE FORMATION OF SOLID LUBRICANT FILMS SUCH AS IRON SULFIDE OR PHOSPHIDE COMPOUNDS IN THE SURFACE ZONE APPARENTLY IMPROVE LUBRICATION PROPERTIES BETWEEN THE SURFACES EVENTUALLY CONTRIBUTING TO DRAMATIC REDUCTION OF WEAR IN A NEW LUBRICANT-R134A.
