Summary
The paper addresses the basic principle of the so-called trigeneration, i.e. the contemporary production of electricity, heat and cold. Particular attention is paid to the influence of reference scenarios that set the performance of the separate generation, in order to avoid unjustified optimism towards potential energy saving and environmental benefits. The paper addresses the present and future state-of-the-art of the potential prime movers for the trigeneration. Only cases based on the use of natural gas as an energy source and related to building air conditioning are discussed. Economic aspects are treated only marginally.
