Summary

This paper presents the outcomes of an ongoing collaborative effort between Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, and Wison New Energies Co., Ltd in assessing Type B LNG Cargo Containment Systems (CCS), for use on LNG Carriers, as defined by the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) International Gas Carrier (IGC) Code.
Type B LNG CCS design features a self-supporting tank the loads of which are transferred to the ship's hull through vertical supports equipped with wooden spacers. The CCS stability is maintained using a combination of anti-rolling, anti-floating, and anti-pitching keys, ensuring the tank's integrity during various sea conditions and ship movements.
Our collaborative assessment encompasses three primary areas of investigation: Ø Non-linear Behaviour Analysis: Properly assessing the non-linear behaviour of such LNG CCS designs can result in long and costly numerical analysis. The approach taken makes use the latest development within Bureau Veritas in-house software considering both strength and fatigue criteria. It has resulted in a comprehensive understanding of the system's performance under various load conditions and over extended periods of operation, equivalent in accuracy to state-of-the-art non linear calculations but at a fraction of the computing cost.
- Fracture Mechanics Assessment: In alignment with the IGC Code's Cargo Containment Safety principles, the cooperation includes fracture mechanics assessment. This evaluation is crucial in predicting and preventing potential structural failures, thereby enhancing the overall safety and reliability of the containment system.
- Material Considerations: The study explores the implications of using different materials for cargo tank construction, specifically comparing stainless steel and aluminium. This comparison takes into account factors such as weight, cost, durability, and compatibility with current vessel designs.
The collaboration between Bureau Veritas M&O and Wison New Energies Co., Ltd brings together extensive expertise in marine engineering, materials science, and regulatory compliance. By combining our resources and knowledge, we aim to advance the understanding and improvement of Type B LNG Cargo Containment Systems.
This paper will present the methodologies employed in our assessment, key findings from each area of investigation, and their implications for the design and operation of Type B LNG CCS. We will also discuss how these results contribute to the ongoing evolution of safety standards and design practices in the LNG shipping industry.
