Summary

The LNG shipping industry underwent a significant technological and design transformation approximately 20 years ago with the introduction of two-stroke slow speed electronically controlled engines and propulsion systems featuring onboard Reliquefaction based on the Nitrogen/Brayton cycle. This design was presented by the Korean shipyards and named Diesel Reliquefaction ("DRL"). Nakilat and QatarEnergy undertook a massive project, approving the construction of 45 nonconventional LNG carriers with DRL design. These vessels were delivered to various Owners between 2007 and 2010 with Nakilat fully owning 25 and partially owning 20 vessels. The newly introduced design concept have experienced serious technical challenges we faced with the newly introduced design concept, which significantly impacted equipment reliability and fleet availability right from the project's inception. However, substantial progress was made in overcoming these initial hurdles. This success is due to the dedication and invaluable contributions of the project stakeholders, who have invested considerable time, research efforts, and financial resources to address the teething problems associated with the new DRL equipment, particularly focusing on the Reliquefaction plant and the electronic controls.
