Summary

The Produce Marketing Association in the United States presented recent technological developments (and their applications to the produce segment) to its members. In the United States, articles are currently identified using a 12-component bar code (Uniform Product Code) but the EAN 13 system will gradually replace the existing zone. Items sold individually are each numbered using a Price Look Up sticker. Parcels and pallets are identified using an EAN 128 language. Other symbologies are under study. Use of the Internet is rapidly becoming more widespread, leading to new professional and commercial applications and to EDI. The Efficient Consumer Response strategy involves the entire sector; its aim is to eliminate useless cost while better meeting customer expectations.
