Summary

THE CURRENT-VOLTAGE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POINT-TUNNEL JUNCTION BETWEEN ALUMINIUM AND AN AMORPHOUS ALLOY RESEMBLING NIZR(2) IN COMPOSITION DIFFER FROM THOSE OF THE USUAL TUNNEL JUNCTIONS BETWEEN A SUPERCONDUCTING AND A NORMAL METAL. THE SHAPES OF THE CURVES CANNOT BE EXPLAINED BY TAKING INTO ACCOUNT ONLY SINGLE-PARTICLE TUNNELLING UNDER CONDITIONS OF THE PROXIMITY EFFECT. A MODEL IS DISCUSSED QUALITATIVELY IN WHICH THE INCREASE IN THE CURRENT FOR A VOLTAGE EQUAL TO THE GAP WIDTH ISDUE TO TWO-PARTICLE ELECTRON TUNNELLING THROUGH THE INTERMEDIATE STATE ; THE LATTER BEING A COOPER PAIR A H FERMI LEVEL. FOR VOLTAGES EXCEEDING THE GAP WIDTH THE CURRENT PASSING THROUGH THE JUNCTION DESTROYS THE SUPERCONDUCTIVITY IN THE VICINITY OF THE JUNCTION.
