Summary

WHEN THE CATALYST IN A REFINING PLANT REACTOR NEEDS REPLACEMENT, THE REACTOR IS NORMALLY COOLED BY RECYCLING GAS USING THE NORMAL RECYCLE COMPRESSOR. HOWEVER, COOLING BELOW 423 K (150 DEG C) MAY TAKE SEVERAL DAYS. THE COOLING CAN BE ACCELERATED BY THE INJECTION OF LIQUID N2 INTO THE GAS STREAM DELIVERED TO THE REACTOR, SURPLUS GAS BEING VENTED TO ATMOSPHERE. AS REACTOR DOWNTIME IS COSTLY, ANY SAVING IN TIME CAN BE COST-EFFECTIVE. D.W.H.
