Using district heating networks for air conditioning.

Summary

Currently available absorption machinery for air conditioning has limited application in district heating networks. Standard, single-stage absorption machines are driven with heat of at least 80 deg C. An advanced cycle which can use heat down to temperatures of about 55 deg C and permits temperature glides in generation by more than 30 K has been identified. Depending on the estimated heat exchanger area, competitive machine costs for this new chiller can be expected. Two prototypes of the new cycle, each with a cooling capacity of about 400 kilowatts, will be tested in district heating networks. The project is financed by a consortium of utilities and the German Ministry of Science and Technology.
