Utilization of untreated sewage water as a heat source for district heating and cooling system.

Summary

Attention is now being focused on using the raw wastewater as a heat source or heat sink for heat pumps in urban districts of Japan, due to increasing concern about reducing energy consumption and improving the atmospheric environment in cities and preventing global warming. Wastewater is produced in large quantities in urban areas and has sufficiently good temperature characteristics to be used as both a heat source and heat sink. The DHC company supplies both hot and cold water to commercial buildings in the area of Kobaru 1-chome, Bunkyo-ku in Tokyo. The paper outlines the system, technical problems encountered in using wastewater, solutions to these problems, and experiences of its operation. The social benefits of the system if it is widely introduced are also discussed.
