Summary

WHEN THE OPERATING CURRENT IS TIME VARYING AND MAINLY IF STAND-BY AT VERY LOW OR ZERO CURRENT IS EXPECTED FOR QUITE A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, THE DESIGN OF THE CURRENT LEADS CAN BE OPTIMIZED TO REDUCE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE THE MEAN VALUE OF THE HELIUM CONSUMPTION. TO OPERATE A POLOIDAL COIL OF A FUSION TOKAMAK IN THE 13 KILOAMPERE RANGE, A PAIR OF VARIABLE CROSS-SECTION CURRENT LEADS HAS BEEN BUILT AND TESTED. THE PAPER DESCRIBES THE PROTOTYPE WHICH WAS TESTED AND ANALYSES THE INTERESTING MEASURED PERFORMANCES.
