VARIABLE TEMPERATURES BELOW 300 K WERE OBTAINED WITH A NEW COOLING PROCEDURE DESCRIBED BY GMELIN AND V. ALPEN. THE FORMATION OF A STEADY STATE VAPOUR BUBBLE IN A SPECIALLY ARRANGED ENVIRONMENT PROVIDES THE REQUIRED TEMPERATURE. FOUR CRYOSTATS, BUILT ON THIS PRINCIPLE, ARE DESCRIBED. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGES ARE SIMPLE BUILDING AND EXCELLENT TEMPERATURE STABILITY.
