Summary

RESEARCH AT THE FEDERAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR AGRICULTURE, AT VOLKENRODE, BRUNSWICK, GERMAN FEDERAL REPUBLIC, HAS SHOWN THAT THE USE OF HEAT PUMPS FOR HEAT RECOVERY FROM COOLED MILK IS WORTH CONSIDERING EVEN IN HERDS WITH ONLY 15 COWS. IF THE COWS HAVE AV. ANNUAL MILK YIELD OF 5,000 L, THE HEAT RECOVERED EACH DAY IN COOLING 200 L MILK TO 277 K (4.C) IS SUFFICIENT TO WARM 150-175 L WATER TO 323-328 K (50-55.C), ENOUGH FOR COWSHED REQUIREMENTS. IN LARGER HERDS (HIGHER THAN 33 COWS) THE HEAT PUMP CAN PROVIDE ENOUGH WARM WATER FOR THE FARMHOUSE AS WELL. (DAIRY SCI. ABSTR., GB. , 43, N.3, MARCH 1981, 168, 1231.).
