Summary

WHEN PEOPLE HAVE TO USE WATER IN AIR CONDITIONING, THE MAIN PROBLEMS ARISE FROM SCALING, CORROSION, BIOLOGICAL FOULING AND DEPOSITS. TO COPE WITH THESE PROBLEMS DIFFERENT INSTALLATIONS NEED DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS. THE OPTIMUM ONE, IN GENERAL, DERIVES FROM A SUITABLE COMBINATION OF A CHEMICAL TREATING OF WATER AND A PROPER DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT OF THE INSTALLATION. IN THE CASE OF EVAPORATIVE COOLING OF WATER, A BLEED-OFF IS ESSENTIAL TO PREVENT EXCESSIVE SALT CONCENTRATION, BUT IT IS OFTEN USEFUL TO TREAT THE MAKE-UP WATER IN ORDER TO LOWER ITS SALT CONTENT OR TO INCREASE ITS SOLUBILITY. IT IS ALSO NECESSARY TO TREAT WATER CHEMICALLY FOR PREVENTING CORROSION AND THE GROWTH OF ALGAE, FUNGI AND BACTERIA. ADIABATIC AIR SATURATION HUMIDIFIERS POSE SIMILAR PROBLEMS ; OWING TO HEALTH CONCERNS, THERE ARE SOME LIMITATIONS ON THE USE OF CHEMICALS. E. F.
