THE INCIDENCE OF LEGIONNAIRES' DISEASE HAS PROMPTED INTEREST IN COOLING TOWER DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE. THIS ARTICLE GIVES A LIST OF DESIGN POINTERS FOR CLEANER TOWERS,AND ALSO SUGGESTIONS FOR RETROFITTING OLD TOWERS TO IMPROVE THEIR SAFETY. IMPORTANT FACTORS ARE THE ELIMINATION OF DRIFT, A DESIGN WHERE DEPOSITS CANNOT ACCUMULATE, AND EFFECTIVE WATER FILTRATION. NON-CHEMICAL MEANS ARE NOW AVAILABLE FORWATER TREATMENT. D.W.H.
