Summary
Concentrations of Legionnella in cooling tower water will suddenly increase if the system is restarted after a shut-down period, e.g. Monday morning start after the week-end. The pathogens in circulating water originate from biofilm in the warmer parts of the circuit, i.e. in the condenser, and accumulations growing during the shut-down are dislodged by the water flow on start-up. Suggested measures are adequate system draining, improved biocide treatment. Systems smaller than 300-kilowatt cooling capacity should have air-cooled condensers. A.R.T.
