Summary
Results of a 4-year field research project into 8 parameters affecting Legionella in a large number of working cooling towers. These field tests have shown factors not disclosed by laboratory work. Total elimination is not possible, but growth can be prevented. 8 treatments were tried. System cleanliness is not enough. Main growth is at warmest part of circuit -usually within the condenser. Feed water affects active elements. Most effective treatment is slug dosing, using 2 or more selected biocides in rotation. An informative document. A.R.T.
