THE ARTICLE OUTLINES THE GENERAL DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR LARGE NGL FRACTIONATION PLANTS. THESE INCLUDE ASPECTS OF PLANT LAYOUT, SAFETY, EASE OF OPERATION AND POSSIBILITIES OF EXPANSION. MEANS OF REDUCING ENERGY CONSUMPTION ARE DESCRIBED WITH EXAMPLES ILLUSTRATING SUCH ITEMS AS THE USE OF THE CONDENSING DUTY OF ONE COLUMN TO SUPPLY THE RE-BOILER DUTY OF ANOTHER. FEED COMPOSITION AND FEED RATE VARIATIONS MUST BE KNOWN AND INCLUDED AS DESIGN PARAMETERS, PARTICULARLY WITH REFERENCE TO ECONOMIC TURN-DOWN. COMPOSITION OF FEED-STOCK MAY BE RESEARCHED BEYOND THE SPECIFICATIONS FROM EXTENSIVE IN-HOUSE RECORDS OR OTHER EXISTING DATA WHICH MAY NARROW THE RANGE CONSIDERABLY. COMMON OPERATING FAULTS MUST BE UNDERSTOOD AND PLANT SIZED AND PROPERLY INSTRUMENTED TOAVOID TROUBLE WHEN THEY OCCUR. FINALLY THE PROBLEMS OF POLLUTION TO THE PLANT COMPONENTS, FOULING AND CORROSION MUST BE ALLOWED FOR IN STANBY DESIGN TO PREVENT EXPENSIVE DOWN-TIME. D.W.H.
