THE AUTHOR GIVES AN OVERVIEW OF THE MAIN DEVELOPMENTS AND DESIGN TRENDS WITH FRUIT PACKING STATIONS IN FRANCE. HE STRESSES THE NECESSITY FOR RENEWING CULTIVARS GROWN IN FRANCE (BECAUSE OF THE SATURATION IN THE DEMAND FOR GOLDEN AND GRANNY APPLES) AND SURVEYS SOME TECHNICAL ASPECTS CHARACTERIZING RECENT DEVELOPMENTS (SUCH AS LOWERING OF OXYGEN LEVELS AND THE INCREASED ACCURACY OF CONTROLLING LEVELS, TEMPERATURE AND RH, THE ACCELERATION OF THE INITIAL DECREASE IN THE OXYGEN LEVEL, IMPROVING THE GAS TIGHTNESS OF COLD ROOMS, CONTROL EQUIPMENT FOR GAS COMPOSITION, ETC).
