Summary

Between 1997 and 2002, the global apple in industry has gone through one of the worst five-year periods in its history. Few regions in the world escaped the downturn. Because of a combination of natural disasters, market setbacks and just sheer bad luck, some of the biggest and best names in the business have disappeared. Unless the industry adopts a consumer-driven approach, it is doomed to go the way of the horse and buggy. All the players in the apple and pear system will have to change their mindset about what it will take to be successful in the food business in the future.
