IIR Member news: Carrier Transicold rents 2,000 CO2 reefers for shipping

Global shipping company MSC Mediterranean Shipping will lease 2,000 containers using Carrier Transicold’s NaturaLINE® CO2 refrigeration system.

The first natural-refrigerant based solution ever developed for marine container shipping was developed by the IIR member Carrier Transicold. The system utilizes repurposed CO2, the refrigerant with the lowest global warming potential among all container refrigerants currently in use. NaturaLINE® units can reduce carbon emissions by 28% compared to previous units using synthetic refrigerant.

A few weeks ago, Carrier Transicold announced that MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, a global leader in transportation and logistics, was about to lease 2,000 containers chilled by NaturaLINE® refrigeration system. It will provide higher level of performance in the -40°C deep-frozen range and it will therefore help MSC add new capabilities for their growing customer base, particularly for seafood and other high-value frozen commodities. This ability to achieve -40 °C was previously only attainable in container systems using a refrigerant with a GWP nearly 4,000 times higher.
