New whitepaper highlights hybrid heat pump “missed opportunity” in the UK

A new report highlights the key role hybrid heat pumps could play in heating decarbonisation in the UK, urging better policies.

Baxi commissioned a whitepaper entitled “Unlocking the Power of Heat Pumps with Hybrid Installations” from Gemserv, a consulting firm specialising in energy management, technological innovation, and environmental challenges.

This document explores the role of hybrid systems which combine heat pumps with existing gas boilers as a solution for decarbonising home heating. The paper offers a series of policy recommendations aimed at accelerating the transition to cleaner heating technologies, including expanding eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, better recognition of the carbon savings from hybrid systems, and adjustments to electricity prices to reduce running costs.

The whitepaper also draws on examples from Europe, where hybrid systems have been widely adopted, particularly in the Netherlands, where there are discussions about making them mandatory for retrofit installations. The UK government’s recent announcements, including the Warm Homes Plan, which boosts funding for heating schemes, align with the paper’s call to make hybrid systems a key component of national decarbonisation strategies.
