Smart standard for smart labels
There are currently no official standards to assess smart labels
Several professional equipment makers, including Cryolog, a time-and-temperature-indicator manufacturer, joined Cemafroid, a French testing organization, in asking AFNOR the French national organization for standardization, to set up a standard for freshness-indicating smart labels.
The labels make it possible to monitor the temperature of refrigerated foodtsuffs and health products. They appeared around 10 years ago and currently, almost a dozen such freshness-indicating labels exist on the French market alone.
However, there are not yet any official standards to assess them. A standard would help define methods to assess the reliability of the labels and the expected efficiency levels required. The project is based on the idea of a standard given in response to voluntary applicants only.
