United States: October 2024 heating and cooling equipment shipment data

AHRI provides monthly data on heating and cooling equipment shipped by US manufacturers in the US market. The data provided covers the two months prior to the month of release. Therefore, data for October 2024 was released in December 2024.

The Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) provides monthly data on the volume of heating and cooling equipment shipped by US manufacturers into the US market. Their latest shipment data report covered the month of October 2024, with year-to-date comparisons with October 2023. 

 

According to AHRI, US shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps totalled 815,360 units in October 2024, up 53.1% from the 532,569 units shipped in October 2023 [1].

Sales in October 2024 appeared to have recovered from the sharp drop in 2023. Indeed, amid high interest rates and inflation, heat pump sales decreased by 15% in 2023 in the US, partly due to postponed purchases in anticipation of new financial incentives for low-income households [2]. In early 2024, nine states accounting for about a quarter of residential energy use jointly agreed to shift toward using heat pumps in residential buildings. The agreement includes a shared commitment for heat pumps to meet at least 65% of residential-scale heating, air conditioning, and water heating shipments by 2030 and 90% by 2040 [2, 3].

Year-to-date combined shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps are up 8.9% over the number of units shipped in the same period in 2023. Year-to-date shipments of central air conditioners increased by 7.1%, while those of heat pumps increased by 11.4%.

Industry data is aggregated from the information supplied by AHRI member companies that participate in the statistics program and can be subject to revision. AHRI’s 300+ member companies account for more than 90% of the residential and commercial air conditioning, space heating, water heating, and commercial refrigeration equipment manufactured and sold in North America.
