Résumé

For many years, microbiologists working on water and environmental samples have reported differences between bacterial counts performed by culture and by microscopy. These observations have led to the notion of Viable but Non Culturable (VNC) state in bacteria. VNC bacteria have lost their colony forming abilities and are not able to growth in usual culture media, but they keep a metabolic activity. A number of pathogenic bacteria have been shown to enter the VNC state. Starvation and temperature seem to be the most influent factors inducing the transition to the VNC state. Some hygienist specialists draw the attention on the possible drawbacks of the VNC state for certain pathogenic bacteria.
