A case study of a UK train air-conditioning system upgrade, following rail privatisation.

Author(s) : SMITH D. P.

Summary

Reliable air conditioning of high speed trains in the United Kingdom has become a priority issue since privatisation of the railway network in 1996. The rolling stock is typically fitted with one air conditioning module per coach; in the event of failure of the module, passengers may have to be moved to another coach, or the vestibule doors may have to be locked open - in either event a 'domino effect' of failed modules can occur due to overloading of the air conditioning systems. The paper provides an insight into long term problems with railway air conditioning and suggests a number of guidelines for both refit and new build modules.
