A CLOSED SYSTEM FOR BATCH/CONTINUOUS FREEZE-DRYING OF LIQUID MATERIALS.

Summary

UP TO NOW, IN A CONVENTIONAL FREEZE-DRYING METHOD FOR BULK PHARMACEUTICALS AND OTHER LIQUID MATERIALS, A TRAY/SHELF SYSTEM WAS EMPLOYED. THE COMPLICATED TRAY/MATERIAL HANDLING IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PROBLEMS TO BE SOLVED IN THIS FIELD. AFTER STUDYING AGAIN THE METHODS OF SEFFINGA (1966), THE AUTHORS HAVE SUCCEEDED IN DEVELOPING A CLOSED SYSTEM FOR BATCH/CONTINUOUS FREEZE-DRYING OF LIQUID MATERIALS. AN ICE-LINING IS FIRST PLACED ON THE INNER SURFACE OF A VERTICAL TUBE AND THEN, A FROZEN LAYER OF LIQUID MATERIAL FORMS ON THE LINING. BY INSTALLING A SIMPLE ADDITIONAL DEVICE ABOVE THE BUNDLE OF TUBES IN THE CHAMBER, ALMOST ALL OF THE LIQUID MATERIAL POURED INTO THE CHAMBER IS FORMED INTO THE DESIRED FROZEN LAYERS, LEAVING THE SPACE NECESSARY FOR WATER VAPORTO FLOW IN ALL THE TUBES.
