A cost-effective absorption chiller with plate heat exchangers using water and hydroxides.

Summary

A cost-effective absorption chiller with water as refrigerant can be built by using plate heat exchangers. In the low-pressure components (i.e., the absorber and the evaporator), this concept can be realized best by separating heat and mass transfer. In the case of the evaporator, flash evaporation can be used. The absorber is a spray absorber and works as follows: first, heat is transferred in a liquid-liquid heat exchanger, then the mass transfer is obtained by spraying the subcooled solution into an adiabatic chamber filled with water vapor from the evaporator. Results are presented for hydroxides. A single-effect absorption test plant with a cooling capacity of 15 kilowatts was built in the authors' laboratory. The working pair is a mixture of different hydroxides and water. An external temperature lift of more than 60 K was reached with a COP of 0.5.
