A cryomagnetic system achieving 17 T and lower than 3 milliK.

Summary

The design and performance of a cryomagnetic facility capable of achieving a temperature of 3 milliK in a magnetic field of 17 T is presented. Using adiabatic nuclear demagnetization of a copper stage, a helium 3 melting curve thermometer may be cooled to a temperature below 914 microK, the spin ordering temperature of the solid helium 3. The lower end of a silver rod coupled to this stage and extending into a 17 T magnetic field cools to below 3 milliK, where the nuclear heat capacity of the silver is rising.
