LNG SHOULD BE STORED AT CRYOTEMPERATURES OF 111K (-162 DEG C). IN TOKYO AREA, THERE ARE AT PRESENT 22 INGROUND LNG STORAGE TANKS, SOME IN OPERATION, THE OTHERS BEING BUILT, WITH THE PRIMARY CONSIDERATION OF SAFETY AND SEISMIC DESIGN. IN ORDER TO CHECK THE FEASIBILITY OF DESIGN, A MODEL TEST WAS CARRIED OUT BY FREEZING THE TANK FARM. THE FARM GROUND WAS FROZEN ARTIFICIALLY; IN THE FROZEN GROUND A 4 M DIAMETER WELL WAS SUNK TO 26 M DEPTH. (Bull. CNRS, FR., 82-730-4366.
